I suppose a lot of people figure it's more stressful for the new employee than it is for the boss of the new employee, and I suppose that's true mostly... but from my perspective, there's the element of 'did I hire the right one?' and 'is this going to be a good fit?'. I worry as much as, if not more than, the new hires do.

Tomorrow I'll train the first, and the second on the 17th. One of the interesting things is, in every interview session i've been in, either hiring my own people or helping someone else hire for their library, everyone has worked out of state somewhere that we hired. It would be easy to find someone in the pool that hasn't; the city has an immense amount of libraries, not just public, but tons of private and specialty ones. There's a library school in the city -- two in this state. That might seem to be a 'so what?' sort of thing, but the next state over has none at all, so it's not really that common. Figure, in the grand scheme of things, librarians aren't exactly an occupation high in need like, say, nurses or teachers.

Got me thinking, when I first applied there... everything I'd done was in the county, and all the library jobs I'd had were close by. But, I had worked for UC-Berkeley for a summer... they had an offsite here, and I taught computer courses for them. It was fun, but I got in on the tail end and they were packing the site up about four months after i started. There was mention of following them and staying on.... but I never persued it because I was still getting my masters at the time. I'm wondering, when I was hired, was that the little thing that tipped the scales... I can't count the number of times I've cited it when talking with faculty who doubt my ability to teach... wish I knew where the gal who hired me was all those years ago. I totally owe her lunch or something. I think stargirl's contemplations got me thinking about that stuff...

In other news, my 'how to draw samurai and ninjas' book came in... expect balrog slaying sketches soon...

time to haul my ass off to bed, i think
