Who turned out the lights?
Jan. 29th, 2008 07:00 pmToday was interesting. Power suddenly went off at work around 2:45pm, just after they announced the school closings due to the temperatures.
This was when it was 42 degrees outside. But, with suddenly no power and expectations of 30 below weather, they literally evacuated the school.
Now, I've dealt with power outages before... we just wait til the power goes on again or until the daylight runs out. I've dealt with evacuations.. we've had a bomb scare.. lockdowns.. we had a shooting...
Anyhow, this is the FASTEST that place cleared out. Up until two months ago, we were doing things by the district... following the leader sort of thing. Two months ago, this was after the shooting (which was outside of the school, btw), our security and operations people decided that we were just going to come up with our own plans and screw the rest of the campuses.
2:45 the power went out. 3:00 pm, we were locking the place down and had all the students out of the building. Go us.
It was interesting, though... you don't realize just how dark a library is until you have to navigate it by the light of a cell phone and a sterno can...
And as a final note on it, I have an awesome staff. They helped get everyone out calmly and safely.
Tomorrow? I go buy a bunch of flashlights to keep on hand for next time...
