For starters, this was the first week of the semester that all classes were running, and none of the classes match up week-wise, so it's not like last semester with two simultaneously running classes. That happens Tuesday, Thursday and Friday (for Friday, I'm not at my home campus, that's a travel day). I'm teaching a full adjunct load, besides putting in the regular 40 hours at the library, plus office hours (Monday and Wednesday) and meetings (I have one next Thursday (at a different campus), and I might have one on Tuesday.
We have a fox living in our yard. The one from December we thought was under our neighbor's tree -- he was just snoozin' in our yard. So I guess we share Mr. Fox. This time we have a picture; will post it once I post this, I'll just edit, don't feel like retyping...
Was in places where camera crews were filming not once, not twice, but three times this week -- three days in a row. Thursday, that I can't talk about too much yet, but once they feature it next Thursday, I'll have a video up and y'all can see three of my fifteen minutes of fame.
Friday morning I get a call from Mark -- the water is shut off. Well, I know we took care of the water bill, pretty much the day it came in from what I recalled. Where's the receipt? Who knows... but... before we panic, told him to call the city. Busy. So he tried the water department. Also busy. Eventually got through -- turns out the water main broke. For the whole city of some 20,000 people. That's like half of DragonCon being without water.
They did act quickly and really did a good job. Soon as the water pressure plummeted, they shut of the water completely to the city. They found the break, cut out that section, and capped off the two ends. Then, they hooked into an emergency line from the next city over, but told everyone to hold off on anything big and not to drink the water because they a) didn't know if it was contaminated until it could be tested and b) the reservoir was down to a foot, so if there was a fire they needed to be sure they could fight it.
This basically resulted in me getting an okay to use the showers on campus over the weekend if need be, and us having dinner the next city over, because even with bottled water (which the city handed out 'free' to all residents -- that'll probably show up on the tax bill ;) cooking is harder without running water.
So the second photo opportunity? Camera crews filming the cars driving through the pick up station to get bottled water.
Saturday rolls around and the all clear is given (after my on-campus shower adventure). Huzzah! While out on errands and after helping Jake pick up this awesome desk from this hundred year old or more independent department store that literally has not changed their prices in decades (and still has a haberdashery room and sells spinning wheels -- i shit you not -- i need to get pictures of this place -- though, they also had a lotr action figure set that they had marked for way less than the original price that i bought, such a strange and interesting place), Mark and I decided to go have a late lunch at the restaurant that was featured on the news the night before, figuring with the water crisis and having to shut down they would appreciate a spike in Saturday business.
Let's see... we were almost through with our entrees when.. that's right.. camera crew shows up and starts filming. Mark's elbow is totally famous now.
And somewhere in there I think there was some fic finishing going on, but with how this week has been, it seems more like I did that a month ago.
Superbowl tonight... I'm going with the 'commercial quarterback' for the win.
Those of you who know football know what that means -- it's on like donkey kong.
Also? That they air commercials ahead of time? Annnoying. Half the fun is the commercials.. and I think between news stations and tv talk shows, i've seen most of what are supposed to be the 'good' ones already. Oh well.
Have been told wearing a Favre jersey will not get me stopped at the door, but will require I at least hum a few bars of 'Favre on the ground'.
