Jun. 30th, 2011 01:19 pmGood afternoon.
I have been asked by various people to explain the happenings regarding the fanfiction archive Lord of the Rings Fanfiction (http://lotrfanfiction.com/). This is not being written exclusively for a particular group, therefore, please feel free to post it (it it's entirety if you do choose to re-use it) if you are a moderator of a community needing information about the developments.
While I am not affiliated with the site as a moderator, I have been a proponent of the site for many years and have used it extensively, second only to my personal archive. For the purposes of this memo, I will attempt to retain neutrality.
The facts that are available specifically in regards to the site are as follows: An announcement was made by Keith Mander on June 26, 2011 that the site was sold to him by Adora, the founder of the site, which began seven years ago. The details can be found on the site's main page (http://lotrfanfiction.com/). You will also find commentary and questions posted by site members by clicking on the appropriate comment links. This sale was not announced in advance to the membership, or to the rest of the moderating staff. A list of frequently asked questions appeared on the same main page on June 28, 2011. It has been stated that while Adora will no longer be the owner, she will be retained as a moderator. The ownership of the site has been transferred to Keith Mander.
The website is not affiliated with any other group (such as a livejournal or yahoo group). A question that has often been asked is "Who is Keith Mander?" or "Why did he buy this site?" You will find below links to a case study that involved another fan site he bought, as well as the link to his blog.

I submit these links to you, with the intent to allow you to come to your own conclusion on the matter. I do not think it appropriate for me to state my personal opinions in this format, as it will likely be reposted around the fandom, but I can be contacted privately for my personal opinion (which will undoubtedly be available on my own website in the near future).
For those who are pulling stories and seek a new location for their fanfiction, the following includes a list of other places to archive. Please note, this is not a complete listing, and some sites have specific requirements for posting. It will, however, give you some other choices. These are all quality sites, run by fans, many with long-standing histories.
Of Men and Elves - http://www.ofelvesandmen.com/
Open Scrolls - http://www.openscrolls.net/ (Het Archive)
Library of Moria - http://www.libraryofmoria.com/ (Slash Archive)
Many Paths to Tread - http://www.lotrgfic.com/ (Gen-Fic, up to light R ratings)
Silmarillion Writer's Guild - http://www.silmarillionwritersguild.org/ (Silmarillion Fanfiction)
I would highly suggest that discussion be taken to the site in question, as that is where answers will be given and the primary players in this can be found. All the best, wherever you stand on this discussion.
