Adding to my theory - Erestor was born deaf (or perhaps became so after some sort of illness or accident in his infancy) and it seems as if after his parents left, someone took the oppurtunity to abuse him. Poor dear little Erestor.
I think I can understand Elrond and Lindir's apparent earlier callousness. It's not that they don't care, it's that they've tried for years and years to help Erestor and nothing has worked. They're probably just as aggravated with themselves for failing him as they are with him for being a difficult case. It still amazes me that no one can figure out he can't hear an Eru-damned thing.
