Getting to know... Erestor

A while back, I posted this meme-type thing... you comment with the name of a character, I tell ya some of their dark little secrets, that sort of thing. And, I didn't forget, I just... lost the info among the meeting notes (this was to keep me busy during a boring in-service)

So, here's the first one, for Binky... stuff you may not have known about Erestor...

a. What initially prompted me to like the character enough to write about him/her.

The first time I wrote about Erestor was in a part of Friendly Wagers; I just wrote him in as having to deal with Celeborn and Galadriel when Elrond was in Gondor. The earliest times I wrote about him and actually gave him some depth was in Choices (Sept 29 of 2003) and in First Love (March 12 2004); at that point he was still a het character but with Glorfindel smitten over him. It wasn't until a couple months later I let the Fin-muse have his way when I wrote Silver and Gold. I guess what I like most about him is what little there is in canon, and that's how I ran wild with the character, trying to figure in the tidbits that were there (which, y'all know, isn't much).

b. One of his/her best traits.

His acceptance of differences, which, how else do you go from Galadriel to Glorfindel (well.. it did take him a few thousand years... but still)

c. One of his/her worst traits.

His temper - he attacks Gildor, he attacks Salgant, he verbally attacks Thingol... he's also got that stubborn old mule nature about him. As a side note, thinking about it, he's also not the most supportive of women's lib, if you read into it... in all honesty, he really does think they belong either in the kitchen or making babies or something of that sort... which, how he fell for Gladders then... but anyhow, moving on...

d. How easy/difficult I find it to write the character.

It's getting harder to write him the older he gets; the more I know of him, the more, in some ways, he upsets me. He's got some grudges he's holding onto, he's got some issues.

e. The story/chapter/paragraph/phrase where I feel that I truly captured the character.

Envy: Close to the 'true' Erestor; the Candles part of the Blue Bunnies series, too. And his parts in For You I'll Cross the Sea

f. My plans (if any) to write the character in the near future.

SPOILERS: In Gondolin (Unforgettable) his first stage performance. It goes badly - very badly; In Valinor, the pink bunnies, he's going to make the decision to retrain himself to enter some boxing/wrestling competitions

Next up... Gildor and Melpomaen... and if anyone else thinks of anyone else they want 'explained', feel free to reply here ^_^

Thanks Zhie! - I like your Erestor - he is not perfect and has his own foibles also he is not weak, hysterical or feminine and that is what makes him so believable.
