so, here's the reply I was about to make to her last reply... y'know, i really did not expect her to get so upset over something that was just an informational explanation... since I know some of you talk to her more than, well, obviously I can't talk to her at all at the moment since she blocked me off her journal... but, here's the reply, for a) anyone who was reading the stuff and b) for anyone to direct her to, if she cools off, because obviously I unintentionally got her upset.
Which is too bad, as I always enjoyed her posts, prayed for her, her friends, and the animals that showed up whenever she'd make posts about those sorts of things. It's funny how upset people get over things online... especially in a case where, to be honest, I don't think she had a personal connection to anyone in her post (I could be wrong on that -- did she know the deceased? I'm not trying to be sarcastic, I'm seriously not sure, because it obviously pissed her off when I posted the research I had found). It happens I really, truly do know Gaylord Nelson's granddaughter, so that part of the article did rub me the wrong way. I don't think it's right for someone to take credit for someone else's work, and that's exactly what it appears has been happening in regards to Earth Day.
Or does Magic Rat just really take a lot of things personally? Again, not trying to be sarcastic -- I really don't know! I just used to read her lotr stuff, happen to own a fuzzy blue cloak that Jake made for me (this Christmas in fact) because of it, and have kept up with her journal even though I'm not particularly interested in her current writings. (I suppose that's a good thing, eh?)
Well, I don't have time to dwell on it anymore. Classes to teach, conference to attend to (or what's left of it), library to manage, meetings to plan for, people to advise. The inner- Erestor is working overtime.
By the way? Though time consuming, and not without stress, I totally have the best job(s) ever. I think I need one of those desk name thingie things that says 'chief counselor' on it. The laminated sign is nice, but, you know what they say about desk name thingies.
They're easier to throw at naughty balrog slayers who disrupt you in the middle of important stuffs ;-)
So, while I'm sorry she got upset and felt the need to go blocking me because she didn't want to discuss it, I'm not sorry that I'm a librarian. I'm not sorry that I feel a need to find the truth. I'm not sorry that I boo google and praise databases. I'd rather be disappointed by the truth than blissfully believing a lie. If that means I don't get to be a person everyone likes, so be it. I'm in good company with Giles, Batgirl, and the uniquely popular fanfictional Erestor. Speaking of... I have some neglected muses to play with...
would-be post under cut
I saw this article when I was researching through things. I said in my first post that he was likely involved in the Earth Week in PA. But Earth Day itself wasn't devised in 1970 in PA, Earth Week was. Earth Day was first discussed in 1969 in WA.
Once I get into a library tomorrow and can go beyond internet and database sources (had to post that first article excerpt, because I can't link directly, the database requires a login), I'm planning to track down the 1969 speech, because I'm curious to see exactly what was said by Nelson in Seattle, and then go from there, probably looking into any sort of archive info from the university and see what other records can be found on Nelson and where he might have developed the idea from -- and you can certainly bet I'll be bringing this up to his granddaughter to see what she might know or have heard (though, I am pretty doubtful that you're interested in that, since that wasn't really your main purpose on the original post, from what I can tell, so I hadn't really mentioned any of that in either earlier post... once a librarian finds a topic to research, it's hard to stop them...)
Also mulled over how that first paragraph could be rewritten so as not to specifically credit Ira, but still get the message across that you're trying to spread, but decided to not even suggest that in the last post because I obviously ticked you off in the first one when that wasn't my intention, and since I didn't know if that would just upset you more, I wasn't going to put the time into it if it was just going to make you more upset.
I did think of another example, unrelated to this topic, where I go off on the whole misinformation thing. Being that I'm Catholic and in an area with a lot of other people who are followers of some form of Christianity or another, I'm sure you can guess their knee jerk reaction to anything that relates to gay rights -- they start quoting bible passages they have no real clue about. So I'm always finding myself explaining how things are being taken out of context, badly translated, and overlooked, and how misinformed they've been by people who tell them what to think without going, reading, and researching themselves. And I do it all very calmly -- for me, it's a teaching moment, even if sometimes some people get a little on edge about it. So, I'm just always like this. It's nothing personal; it wasn't meant to downplay what happened to poor Holly, or so many other people in the world. I understand your intention, but I hope you understand what mine was when I made my first response.
And now, it's sleepytime for me...
Don't worry, you can say whatever you want here. Not blocking, not deleting, and certainly not minding if you disagree with me. Strangely enough, I'm a very open-minded conservative...
