deathangelgw brought up a good point today, on how those little '99% percent of people won't repost this' things, while intended as an awareness tactic, just aren't the same as actually going and doing something. Talking about supporting a cause isn't the same as writing a letter, donating money, or volunteering.
So what about helping if you don't have time or money to help? Try these places...
freerice.com -- since 2007, this learning game site has been donating rice for correct answers to questions on different subjects (math, science, vocab, foreign language, and famous paintings, to name a few). It's totally legit, easy to do, and their new beta version allows you to login and keep track of your scores.
goodsearch.com -- a search engine that allows you to choose a non-profit, and every time you search, will donate money to that non-profit -- it's not Google, but then, maybe that's a good thing...
And on an unrelated note, lalaith_raina and I discovered three new dinosaurs last night! The elusive Erestorsaurus (the tiny-handed herbivore that typically stalks younger dinosaurs as potential mates and likes to write poetry), the Galadrydactyl (tricky, that one) and the prettiest dinosaur ever, the Glorfindelidon.
More as our archeological team makes up more things about them...

Date: 2010-09-28 06:27 pm (UTC)Your local United Way is a place that organizes nonprofits and charities in the area, and generally have around 200 different volunteer opportunities on hand. So if you want to help, but you aren't into feeding the homeless and don't know what else there is, your local UW is always happy to take calls or invite you in. We're happiest when we can help others to take part.
Also, watch your local UW's website or even just your local papers. We pimp local business fundraisers, and a lot of them are really fun. Right now in Akron, there is an upcoming Texas Hold 'Em night, along with a horse racing event that has amazing prizes, and our Docs Who Rock concert. So if you're willing to pay for entertainment to treat yourself now and then, consider local entertainment events that send all proceeds to a charity or nonprofit. :>
