Bookstore Blues
Jun. 17th, 2007 02:00 amTonight Mark and I headed up to the local Half Price Books. They were closed about a week ago for renovations when we went, meaning I had to spend the rest of the book budget for the fiscal year elsewhere. Felt a little bad, because I figure, a smaller store like that could use it more than the bigger chain stores.
Anyhow, went in, and was dismayed that the layout was redone like the HPB that I don't like that's out on Brown Deer. The shelves are way tall, the children's section is shoved into a corner, the Language and Linguistics is shoved next to Poetry (for me, this means 400s next to 812 and 822); the sports and pets are shoved together (790s and 630s) and yet, the games, which should be in the 790s with sports are in three different places. One of the 'top three favorite people' at that store was there tonight and warned me when we came in that 'as a librarian, you're going to weep'. Which wasn't quite true. I just sighed a lot, pouted, and told Mark at one point when we were navigating the outrageously tall fiction section 'I guess I'll be going to Borders a lot more'.
See, I have some claustophobia issues, and that place, with the narrow aisles that are way too long and nine foot shelves, not good. (The library I am in has shelving units that are only 12 ft long, so there are a lot of breaks and 'crossroads' between aisles.
It was not as cozy as before, either.
Now, at the same time, Borders is doing renovation work on their cafe, so I was a little worried there. Mark and I headed over there after HPB closed (and sadly, I found nothing at HPB for father's day; normally, all kinds of stuff, but when you can't find anything because of the lousy filing system...)
I had been worrying that Borders would get sucky furniture. The walls are snarf-colored (yellow and red, for you non-Thundarians), but they had four leather chairs WITH pillows that looked mighty comfy to me. I do believe meetings of the Erudite Exchange will be pleasant ones. And, I found a book for Dad there. Yay.
Of course, I like variety, and with the very real possibility that I will not be going to HPB very much, I must turn to... Barnes and Noble, teh evols!!1!!11
Alright, alright, I'm exagerating a little bit...
They have a nice discount section. I've found stuff there I can't find elsewhere.
They sell cheesecake.
But I've managed to meet every pissyass employee they have working for them. Seriously. Hopefully, it will not be so bad in the future. Perhaps I will grow to love them, a little. At the very least, I'll take MJ with me to protect me with her magic powerz of the B&N. It's dangerous, because I'm helping to promote her book addiction, but then, I was never good at intervention that didn't bring about a relapse in the cause and symptom and all that. And besides, is a book buying addiction really a bad thing?
I did score a copy of the original Father Christmas book from '76. 8 bucks. Worth it. Guy at register was surprised that a. it was there and b. i found it. (this was at half price... i never wander the nostalgia section, however, it was the closest thing to the door and the only non-claustrophobic area in the joint).
And that's the book news for today. Tonight. Whatever.
At least it's an excuse to use the icon.
I dare Wiley Co. to send me a cease and desist letter for that.
