Library Mouse
Aug. 18th, 2007 07:48 amYesterday the head of the student support center came in to tell me he'd been going down the hallway and a wee lil mouse ran across the hall. He was asking my advice on whether to call maintenance about it. Then he turned around and says 'Oh, hey, there it is, now you have a library mouse'
So, I of course got up (briefly thought of Ms Magic Rat, as I do at all times when there are animals to be saved) and trotted on over to the door. Didn't see it right away, but then the support guy came over and points at the stairs.
There goes this tiny mouse-thing (others were claiming it was a shrew, but I'm pretty certain it was a baby mouse), trying to hop his way down the steps. In the main hallway, there's a huge set of stairs leading from the library and admin down to student services, bookstore, and cafeteria, with this ginormous railing around it... anyhow, back to the mousie. It turns out, I can make it down stairs faster than a field mouse. Then, I just scooped him up in my hand to a chorus of 'ew!'s from those who had gathered around. 'What? It's just a mouse.'
'It's going to bite you!' someone warned.
'Shh, stop giving him ideas' I suggested as the other librarian came out with the mail bin for me to put the mouse in. Both he and I decided the critter was aweful cute, but that it was not in good form to keep said library mouse. I took it outside, happened to meet up with our lead student worker on her way in, and she and I (minus my shoes) trekked around the pond to let him go in the wild.
This, of course, was pretty stupid on my part. First, without shoes, I was subject to the millions and millions of goose droppings, for not only are Sam and Rosie's goslings all grown up, but a whole flock has now joined them, but also, I fell two days ago when Dark came over, and my toes were swollen and sore. But, the mouse has been liberated.
But now, I have to get back to the Elves. I have four pages, two charts, and 35 footnotes thus far. And I've only just gotten to the Noldor. But I WILL finish this paper.
That is all... until next time, I remain,
Zhie, master librarian and mouse catcher extraordinaire, future tolkien scholar if this paper ever gets finished...
