If you're not cutting coupons, you really should be

In these difficult financial times, I offer a bit of advice to those out there who might not be <3ing the Sunday paper inserts the way they should.

Coupons do seem like a silly sort of thing. 30 cents here, 55 cents there -- it hardly seems worth the paper they're printed on. However, take those same coupons, combined with in-store specials, and, if you can find them, places with double coupon days, and you can really save some serious cash.

Take, for example, the shopping excursion I partook in last night. We hit everything just at the right time: coupons + double coupon weekend + in-store savings

Total before all that: $283

Total after in-store specials: $232

Total after doubled coupons: $152

A savings of $131; this was obviously on name-brand stuff that coupons were issued for.

Some of it was stock-up items: we had a couple of coupons for Airborne and things that we don't need now, but later on we'll use. That one's a good example... the Airborne was about $6.50, on sale for $6.00, and the coupon was $2.00, so when doubled was -$4.00, meaning the Airborne was only $2 -- you can't get the generic stuff that cheap.

So, when they have those ladies on TV that can make a meal for six for under $10 and you change the channel 'cause it sounds like a scam... it's probably not.

And that's the happy housewife news for today. Back now to being a librarian...

This is about, oh, five times as long as it's supposed to be. Oh, well. Thranduil, Silmarillion, in Valinor... sorry, I can't help but put him there except that I know it's so far off canon it's not funny. Well, maybe a little funny.
