zhie: (plot bunnies)

Last night, the mattress decided it didn't want to live with us anymore. The springs were poking through again, and it was to the point that the duct tape used to cover the original holes was now in some places all there was, since the fabric on it was deteriorating. We've had it for over seven years now - it was the first thing we bought together, even before we got married so that there would be a bed in the apartment when we got there (we ended up taking turns sleeping over at the apartment leading up to the wedding, didn't 'try it out' ahead of time.. good Catholics and all...).

Anyhow, last night it decided to be a bitch, at roughly midnight. As there are no mattress stores I know of open at midnight, Mark used the usable side of the bed, and I slept out on the pull out, the same bed I was using when I was sick trying not to get him sick.

Sidenote on sickness... bronchitis takes a long friggin time to shake... still have it, and this is going on two weeks now, dammit.

So, back to the mattress. This morning, we got up too damn early for a Saturday morning, and checked out the info online for the city dump, hours and all that. Then we headed over to the closest place (and the only place in our lil city) with mattresses, where we got the first one. Considering we bought the first one, boxspring, mattress, frame, and bookcase headboard with built-in lighting for roundabout $600 alltogether, figured they might have mattresses for not too outrageous, and depending, we could get it onto the wagon.

After looking at everything that was there, the most comfy (and expensive) one was $450; now, having not gone mattress shopping in a while (er, only once ever before), I called up the parents to get their thoughts... after explaning it was the set, not just one half of it, they basically did the whole 'ooo, yes, that's a good deal, you should get it, get it now before someone else buys it... do it! do it now!' (parents... accountants... no further explanation... love 'em, though, they are my financial heroes)

Told the guy at the place we had to get our other car (which was true), did some grocery shopping at the Aldi's in the same strip mall, grabbed food from McDonalds, and then came home and... Kuzco was on! Which meant I woke WAY too friggin early... usually I don't get up UNTIL Kuzco is on (what? I love that shop... emperor turned into llama... besides, if you've seen the show? Oh my gosh, I'm so like Kuzco at times... I can relate to him... sadly...)

I checked online to see if anyone else had any mattress sales going on or if anyone else sold the particular mattress we were looking at for a cheaper price. I did find the same mattress, in quite a few other spots... for way more, ranging from 829 to 1279. (Mom and Dad were right... correct as usual, super accountant parents!)

So we buzzed back out, but this time, we dragged out the old mattress and box spring (which, I'm sure Harley hates me for, he had scratched a number of holes in the old one and had a little network of kitty tunnels in it, which I proceeded to tie multiple times to the car whilst fending off a plot bunny. Mattress got to dump, we went and bought happy new mattress, which the guy only tied in two places with twine, and it held better than my dozen or so crisscrosses with rope. Something to be said for experience. After the mattress was home, we ran out to the other grocery, and the bank, and the sort of all-purpose store, where new laundry baskets and some purple bunnies were purchased. Took MIL's groceries to her (reason for second grocery trip). Brought home... more mcdonalds, since it was 3pm by that point. Not really wanting to see another white and red bag for a while, blah, but didn't want to cook at all because I knew what awaited me at home...

See, you'd think, when the new ones came home we could just put them in the bedroom, no problem. Oi. I learned today just how much stuff gets lost under the bed in seven and a half years. Growing up, I slept in bunk beds or on a loft, so I've never encountered this before. I mean, there's only, like, six inches of space under there! I found... socks. So many friggin' socks. I had to go apologize to the dryer, for pete's sake! All these years I thought the dryer was eating them, and it was my bed!

Candy wrappers. Mark got glares and such for that. I don't eat in the bedroom; my sister used to eat in her bedroom and one day my mom actually found a mousie decided under her bed was perfect for raising a family of eleven... yeah. NO food in bedroom! Glares for the two soda cans I found, too. Only water in the bedroom, and even that shouldn't stay come morning!! (or am I wrong on this and just paranoid?)

We did four loads of laundry... granted, two were linens, but the other two were 'stuff under the bed'. I found an entire box of art/craft supplies from 1999 (so said the receipts from Ben Franklin that were with the pony beads), including the stickers I would pick up from the college bookstore (I had quite the sticker fetish, it seems... I barely remember a lot of the stuff, almost like I was concentrating so much on college itself that I didn't focus on other things... oh, right, that was what was happening, wasn't it...)

Okay, so time for weird remembered college story. Freshman year, I took speech 1 since it was required, and met this lady in class, really hit it off with her. We'd chat before class, eventually would walk back to the student union together and have lunch, and so on. We were having lunch once early the next semester and she mentioned something, pop culture related, and I replied with something along the lines of 'oh, yeah, I was just a kid, but I remember that' or something to that effect, to which, she suddenly looked confused and asked, 'wait, how old are you?' and after telling her, and her telling me she thought I was older, she quickly remembered somewhere she had to be, and, zoom, she was off. Never saw her again.

Back to the mattress! So, as I sat to take a rest at one point, I took a good look at the mattress and boxspring. Since it's been established that I can fall asleep on and get a good night's sleep on a rock, a bed of nails, a pit of feathers, and probably even jello, I just let Mark pick out the mattress, since he's the one who tosses and turns and takes forever to snooze.

We got the kind with the pillowtop part, so it's higher than the old one by a good eight inches. And, it's snow white, which did make me a little nervous. But the best part, or I suppose the most interesting would be better, is that the pattern on the mattress is of flowers and stars (and anyone who knows the bunniverse should be able to figure that one out as I cuddle this new plot bunny).

But wait! The adventure is far from over! For once I threw away most everything under the bed because if I didn't know it was there I didn't need it sorted through the stuff on the floor, I realized it REALLY needed to be vacuumed before we brought the mattress in. Alas, the vacuum didn't want to pick anything up, so I changed the bag. And still, nothing. So I flipped it over, and good grief, it was like I had a whole other cat living up there! I yanked out clump after clump of kitty hair from orifices I didn't know vacuum cleaners had, only to find that the belt had broken, too. It meant a run out to a store that was still open for a new one, more fast food (NOT mcdonalds, thankfully), and then vacuuming, moving stuff, moving the stuff we had to move to move the stuff, and getting it all done in time to watch SNL, which was so nice to see after the hiatus.

I am still amazed at how much stuff was under that bed. I threw out four big black trash bags. FOUR! Guh. And I'm sneezing still from all the dust bunnies. Right now, I'm waiting for Mark to be done in the shower so I can grab one quick... just doesn't seem right to hop into a new bed without a shower, I guess.

This is coming off staying late last night at work after everyone left, and integrating all of the VHS tapes into the DVD section to create a massive AV section and open up space for the periodicals. I'm sure my staff is going to... hmm, I should go check my emails, see if anyone noticed it today, as we were open (I just never work Saturdays)...

No, they were busy with call number changes, or, they are pretending I didn't go and completely rearrange the AV stuff. Or, no one reads my emails and memos...

M'kay, time for shower and bed... yay for new bed that won't poke me!

Total plot bunny count for today: 3

Answer honestly. How much trouble did you have waking up this morning? XD

Also, I think you're amazing for doing all of that in one day. May I reiterate the whole "magical librarian" point?

Oh, I TOTALLY didn't want to get up today... I lingered a whole hour until my cough was so bad I had to go take more cough syrup (yeah, stupid bronchitis still here... blah)

I had someone ask me while we were out if I was using a time turner, lol.

Oh, that's an awesome deal... it's great getting bargains like that. I remember getting the desk I have at one of those floor model/slightly dented sales... it's got a half-inch ding in it on the front, but something minor like that, or like the soot stain on your mattress, it's always great to happen on deals like that.

today i'm planning on doing nothing, with the exception of grading papers and maybe stopping at the bookstore... lazy day for today, i have to balance out a productive day with a calm one

Oh dear!
And I think I have busy days.
Well, congrats on a new mattress, even if it took an adventure to get it. I've had a waterbed for, mmm, a long time. Hah, I think probably about 12 years or so. I adore it, and the nicest part is that there is no "under the bed", so I don't have to fret over what's down there, haha. I'm so horrible about eating on my bed; I panicked when I read about your sister having mice under hers. Made me check under my bed here in the dorm. Iiiick.

I hope the plot bunnies are treating you well, and that you catch up on some well-deserved Zs. :]
