They had a TOS that allowed them to alter and sell whatever was uploaded. They claimed not to, but I had two different lawyers look it over and they both agreed that was what was going on.
When they first opened, they targeted prolific authors, in order to get people who would load lots of stories all at once onto their site. After the TOS thing was figured out, most LOTR authors yanked their fics who had loaded them. As of today, there are only 206 fics for LOTR on their site, while we all know how huge this fandom is.
Wait a minute, what? There's a site where people were trying to make money off of fanfiction...? Uhm... isn't that just a little uhmmm... against the law?
