Always a little wary about what's real/what's a scam out there... this one looks legit, but, opinions? Or, anyone here know any of these peoples? I just want to make sure it's not some scam before I reply... Message is below...

Hello! I’m writing you on behalf of a friend of mine (both in RL and in fandom), Stacie Holeman (truelovepooh on LJ). Stacie has been battle Stage III ovarian and breast cancer for two years without the benefit of medical insurance. As you can imagine, this has been a very difficult fight. Because of her lack of insurance and over $200,000.00 in medical bills she has no access to hospital treatment and is receiving only the bare-minimum of chemotherapy. I’m one of her friends working within fandom to help raise money to pay for her treatment. Our group, “Support Stacie,” has a multi-fandom fundraiser taking place April 3rd-6th for which we need are in need of authors. I’m hoping you might be interested in participating. The auction serves as a writing challenge to the authors who sign up. Should you decide to join us, you would be auctioned off to write a fic on demand, within the boundaries you dictate. So, for example, you might commit to writing a 2,500-word story that sticks to your OTP. The winning bidder would then be able to send you a fic challenge within the boundaries you dictate. I don’t want to trouble you in this message with too many details, but you can find all the details by visiting these links: Information on who Stacie is: http://www.pooh.mediablvd.org/blog/?p=1 Information on the auction: http://supportstacie.net/?page_id=221 Location of the auction: http://www.majiksfanfic.com/phpbb/viewforum.php?f=101 Update on Stacie’s health: http://supportstacie.net/?p=259 List of all the authors signed up so far: http://www.majiksfanfic.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=101&t=2191 This is our third Author Auction and we’ve had enormous success with the previous two. The auctions require very little time commitment from the authors but have made an enormous difference in helping save Stacie’s life. So far we’ve raised approximately $12,000 which has enabled Stacie to increase her chemotherapy and receive treatment for pneumonia this winter. I’d be happy to answer any questions you might have about Stacie’s situation, the Author Auction (http://supportstacie.net/?page_id=58), or SupportStacie in general. You can feel free to call me at (250)731-9166, email me at hannah.wharton@gmail.com, or message me back. *Please note: The deadline for sign ups has been extended until Monday, March 30th, 2009* Thanks for taking the time to read this. All my best, Hannah (LorelaiSquared)

I do think lots of folks are using the internet for things just like this... and they are legit however... I have no idea unless you know someone who actually KNOWS some of these folk to tell if it's real or scam! Do report back what you find out... I would be interested in knowing!

From Sivan's post, they mined authors from lotrfanficiton...

I tend to be kind of suspicious of these kind of things too. If this was for a friend you knew, or promoted by someone you trust, that would be one thing, but a mass message blitz like this gets my guard up.

I prefer to help the people that I know...and there are plenty of people on the flist who could use a bit of help, even if their situation is not as dramatic as this.

I'm usually very suspicious, but this looks real enough to me and a key word search doesn't turn up anything on the hoax / urban legends sites. There's an LJ community for it, too: http://community.livejournal.com/supportstacie/

I would be inclined to be a bit suspicious about this. When I went to the LJ community, the "Support Stacie" banner looked suspiciously like Emma Watson (Hermione Granger). Maybe it's just me, but I would tread carefully.

However, I will say that if it's a hoax, they certianly know how to go for the sympathy vote (Stage 3 Ovarian AND Breast cancer).

Actually, there are several 'fan' banners there... for different fandoms I suppose.

Never seen that one... however, best to be on the careful side. If legit, I would think they would endeavor to protect a person if they decide to donate... like using paypal. You may want to find out if the story's been written up in the woman's local paper (if it's that dire, I would think it had been).

Just be careful as I know you have a kind heart. :)
