“Do you mind if I sleep down here tonight?”

Elrond exchanged a worried look with Celebrian. It had been easy enough to get an idea about what was going on, from the sullen look Glorfindel had given them when they entered the parlour, to the awkward moments when Erestor stepped in. He was holding an open box of small items and uneasily asked for Glorfindel to take a look at some things. Glorfindel had refused – refused to look at the items or at Erestor. In fact, he had acted as if the other Elf did not even exist.

After a few minutes of standing in the doorway, Erestor slumped his shoulders and left. Celebrian followed after, but the only explanation she received from Erestor was that he was leaving – and it was doubtful that he would return. Upon bringing this news to Elrond, the peredhel demanded an explanation from Glorfindel.

Glorfindel nodded toward a letter on the table, left unnoticed until now. It was folded and placed atop an envelope of higher quality than was usually seen around the house.

The letter was a summons of sorts – an apology, a plea, a declaration of love, a request, and a vow. It would have been – should have been – beautiful. Indeed, the sincerity was such that it felt the author was practically in the room, on his knees, begging with such hope. There was something so personal about it, so genuine, as if the writer had held it to his breast with uncertainty as it dried, or wept in fond remembrance of years past upon signing it, or simply sighed and captured his very breath and essence in the fibers of the paper upon which his sweet words were written.

It was horrible. It was a choice – an uneasy choice that would leave one person overjoyed and the other brokenhearted beyond repair. As Elrond refolded the letter, the echo of the front door closing carried through to the parlor. Glorfindel looked about to cry, but not a tear was shed.

He repeated his question again. Elrond nodded. “Maybe in the morning, we can figure out another arrangement. There are other rooms unused that you could move into.”

“I will not be here in the morning,” whispered Glorfindel. He swallowed hard and Celebrian rushed to his side.

“Fin, do not fade for him,” she pleaded quietly. “This is a shock, a horrible shock, but it may only be temporary or... something...”

He smiled sadly. “I am not going to fade; I am stronger than that.” He kissed her cheek and added, “I just need to go. I promise you, I have no intention of harming myself – nor anyone else. I just need to leave, but I am tired right now.”

“You are welcome to stay,” said Elrond solemnly.

“I know. And I may return,” he added, though his look was doubtful. “But I need to get away from here. Too many memories right now.” He sighed. “A favor?”

“Anything,” said Celebrian before Elrond had the chance.

“Please... never call me Fin again,” he said, looking away.

I really have no better or more eloquent way of saying how beautifully sad this is. ...and by the way, I'm hitting up the Valar to ask a good ol' WTF MAN of them. I thought they were all in for the Ress/Fin lovings.
